DEX Competitive Events

Purpose of competitive events:
Development of competencies for careers in marketing, management, merchandising, and entrepreneurial skills and knowledge.

Business Simulations :
The event activities measure knowledge, skills and attitudes identified by as essential to the success in a given occupation. Competencies are measured by a case problem or role- playing activity and a written test.
  • Apparel & Accessories Marketing - Perform marketing/management functions in clothing and related articles of personal wear and adornment.
  • Fianancial Services Marketing Management - Perform marketing/management functions in financial institutions such as banks, savings and loan associations, credit agencies, credit unions etc.
  • Hospitality Marketing Management - Perform marketing/management functions for lodging, food and beverage services, special events and meeting space.
  • Marketing Management - Perform marketing/management functions that can be applied broadly in any marketing environment. Includes: place/location marketing, charity/event marketing, marketing research, distribution, etc.
  • Restaurant and Food Service Marketing/Management - Perform marketing/management functions in a restaurant or food service business.
  • Retail Merchandising - Perform marketing/management functions in any retail establishment.
  • Travel and Tourism Marketing Management - Perform marketing/management functions in a business engaged in satisfying the desire of people for productive or enjoyable travel services
Case Studies:
  • Human Resource Management - Decision Making - Provides the opportunity to analyze a real-world human resource management case situation and to present solutions to a professional (judge) with experience in human resource management. Event is divided in first and second year competition.
  • Management Decision Making - Merchandising - Provides the opportunity to analyze a real-world management case situation, and to present solutions to a professional (judge) with experience in merchandising management.
  • Business-to-Business Marketing - Provides a team of two (2) participants the opportunity to analyze a real-world case situation with marketing/business activity between organizations, and to present solutions to a professional (judge) with experience in marketing and management.
  • International Marketing - Provides a team of two (2) participants the opportunity to analyze a real-world international case situation, and to present solutions to a professional (judge) with experience in international marketing and management.
  • Sports and Entertainment Marketing - Provides a team of two (2) participants the opportunity to analyze a real-world sports and entertainment marketing case situation, and to present solutions to a professional (judge) with experience in sports and entertainment marketing.
  • Sales Manger Meeting - Provides a participant the opportunity to analyze a real-world sales management case situation, and to present solutions to a professional (judge) with experience in sales management.
  • Business Ethics - Provides a team of two participants the opportunity to analyze a business situation containing an ethical dilemma and to present a resolution of the dilemma to a professional (judge) with experience in business.
  • E-Commerce Decision Making - Provides a participant the opportunity to analyze a real-world e-commerce case situation, and to present solutions to a professional with experience in marketing and e-commerce.
Prepared Business Presentations:
  • Design - Provides a participant the opportunity to present an original design (drawing, illustration, computer-generated design, actual product, etc.) developed by the participant to one or more potential buyer clients (judges).
  • Entrepreneurship (Starting a Business) - Provides one (1) to three (3) participant(s) the opportunity to develop a proposal to start a business, and to present the proposal to a potential financial institution or investor (judge). The proposed business plan may be a sole proprietorship, partnership, corporation or franchise.
  • Sales Promotion Plan - Involves an individual participant preparing and presenting a one-month promotion campaign for any product ((s) and/opr service. The participant will assume the role of employee/buyer/manger, representative of a manufacturing firm, representative of a buying office, or a representative of a small business.
  • Sales Representative - Provides the opportunity to demonstrate ability to organize and deliver a sales presentation for a product and/or service of the participant's choice, including interaction with one or more potential buyers (judges). This event is divide into first and second year competitors.
  • Web Site Development Team - Provides a team of two participants the opportunity to develop a tasteful and functional front-end Web site that involves the sale of product(s) and/or service(s) through the Internet. The participants will then walk the client or potential client through the "customer experience" of a Web site created specifically for that client/potential client. The goal is to create a high quality user experience that attracts the first-time visitor and turns the visitor into a repeat customer.
State only competitive events:
  • Employment Application - Provide a situation that will evaluate the contestant's proficiency in answering a "help wanted" ad; writing a resume and presenting oneself by means of an employment interview.
  • Extemporaneous Speech - demonstate communication skills in arranging information, organizing information, and presenting information orally and in an effective manner without prior access to the topic.
  • Retail Sporting Goods Sales - demonstrate the ability to organize and present a sales presentation in the area of sporting goods merchandise.
