It's finally warming up and spring semester is winding down. While some of you will continue on for summer session classes many are already making summer plans. The IT team at South Central College is well into the planning stages for the summer and we wanted to give you a heads up on what is happening this summer.
In keeping up with our lab hardware rotations we will be swapping out the computers in four labs. We will put new computers in C-112 on the Faribault campus as well as A-129, C-160 and C-179 on the North Mankato campus. The existing computers from these labs will be used to upgrade computers in other areas of the college such as office machines, small labs, and workstudy computers. If you are in need of a rotation plan please submit a request to the helpdesk. We will be working with the building maintenance staff on when we move these computers so that the rooms can be cleaned and upgraded in one move.
Along with hardware upgrades we will be working on updated software images for all labs. This means we will be reloading the software images in all SCC computer labs. If you are going to be needing specific software on the computer labs this fall please get your requests in ASAP. We will be locking down all images at the end of July to allow for final deployment and testing before the start of the semester. We cannot guarantee additional software can be loaded onto lab machines after this date for the start of the semester. Requests for new software additions after the start of the semester will also involve after hours work and may cause overtime charges to be billed back to your department. So please get your requests in early.
We will also be working on updating all SCC computers for security patches and new anti virus software. For the past nine years MnSCU has maintained a contract for campuses to buy into with Symantec. However due to many campuses dropping the service they are not going to renew. We will be moving to a Microsoft solution that is included in our Microsoft licensing. Please be patient as we bring everyone's computers up to date.
We will also be processing purchase requests starting around July 1. If you have received funding for a technology related purchase please help us out by creating a help desk ticket stating what it is you are purchasing and where the funding is coming from. We will process these orders and work with you to get the items inventoried and configured for use at the college. Please remember that technology purchases often take a minimum of 10 days to fulfill. So please plan accordingly.
